How to organise class notes so revision is easier

A good note system is not just about writing everything down. It is about being able to find the right explanation when you need it. A simple structure by class, subject, lesson and page can make your notes easier to review throughout the term.

Start with a consistent hierarchy

Use the same structure for every subject: class or course, subject, unit or chapter, then individual lesson pages. Consistency matters more than creating a complicated folder system.

Give every page a descriptive title

Avoid titles such as 'Notes 1' or 'New page'. Use a phrase that tells you what the page contains, such as 'Photosynthesis – light reaction' or 'Algebra – linear equations'.

Separate main ideas from examples

Write the central definition or principle first. Follow it with an explanation, worked example, diagram or question. This makes it easier to scan the page during revision.

Mark questions that need another look

Use a visible question mark or a short 'review' note beside unclear material. When you revisit the lesson, resolve the question or link it to the relevant topic.

Create a short revision summary

At the end of a lesson, write three to five key points in your own words. This summary helps you quickly recall the lesson before reading the full notes.

Review and tidy weekly

Spend a few minutes each week renaming unclear pages, moving misplaced notes and listing topics that need revision. Small maintenance prevents a large backlog.
